Revolution Hawaii does outreach every Saturday night at Chinatown. We go out there passing out sandwiches and water to the homeless people living their lives out there on the streets. We are not just out there with food and water but we also go out there with loving compassionate hearts to build relationship with them, showing them love and care.
It’s been two and a half months now since we’ve been doing this. Getting to know these people has been such a great and wonderful experienced in our lives. At first, it’s hard for them to open up their doors for us because of course we’re strangers to them. But as the days go by our always being out there for them begins to makes them want to know us more and makes it easier for them to open up those doors that have been closed for years. Those doors that no one has cared to try and open. It’s amazing to see how the friendships begin to grow stronger and stronger.
We always get back home late at night because so much time is spent listening and talking to these people. Most of these people had great careers in life but they failed to move on and just ended up on the streets. They are trying to get off the streets and yes, we do our best too to get them into treatment. Some of them have gone into treatment due to our efforts but unfortunately they usually do not last long. They find it hard to live under rules and end up quitting or getting kicked out, only to end up back on the streets. We’ve been praying for them that God will open up doors for them to find the freedom and joy that only Jesus can provide.
A few weeks ago as we were roaming around the park at Chinatown talking to people, we came up to this homeless crew under a big tree which they called their best spot in the park. We know some of them and we began talking with them and here comes a girl named Anna. She is like a mother to the homeless people in the crew. She was so happy to see us and boom! she just started off the conversation with her stories. She shared to us that the biggest thing she struggles with is LIFE. Just like the others. She began her stories with how she came to Hawaii for vacation and how she just ended up on the streets.
Whenever we came by their spot, she would open her eyes wide and with a big smile on her face give hugs to everybody. That place began to be our good spot too. The crew began to be our best buddies. They are such wonderful people and we love to go hang out with them. As time goes on Anna has begun to be more close to us. I am so glad for this.
One amazing thing about her that I just started to realize is that before, every time we would come by, she would just start off the conversation with beautiful stories. But now, she starts the conversation with a prayer. How wonderful! Last week we came by their spot to visit and she held hands with us and started praying that God would guide us and bless us in whatever we do. She talked to God with tears that time and I felt so much compassion and was so thankful for her. What a wonderful lady.
I am so glad and thankful that I can be a member of this team going out to love others and God in a deeper way, just like Jesus!
